Which stocks are Brits most curious about? We evaluated search behaviour across UK and US stock markets to understand which equities capture the most attention on Google.

We analysed all FTSE 100 and NASDAQ 100 companies, combining search volumes for three core terms – “[Stock] share price,” “[Stock] shares,” and “[Stock] stock” – into a single total per company to paint a picture of average monthly UK search demand over the past 12 months.

Key Findings

Most Popular Stocks

The top of the search rankings highlights the contrast between FTSE domestic favourites and NASDAQ tech leaders:

  • Lloyds is the most searched stock in the UK with 764,800 monthly searches, outpacing even Tesla (678,000) and NVIDIA (640,000). Lloyds shares may be drawing huge interest because they are a trusted, dividend-paying UK bank with strong recent performance and growth potential, complete with an accessible entry price.
  • Tesla and NVIDIA dominate NASDAQ searches, together generating 1.3m searches, nearly half of total NASDAQ volume.
  • BT (410,600) is the second most-searched FTSE stock, narrowly ahead of BP (402,100). Both reflect strong UK interest in telecoms and energy.
  • IAG (383,800) and Tesco (251,000) show that consumer brands also attract significant attention, while Aviva (218,000), HSBC (206,400) and Barclays (191,300) illustrate the role of financials.
  • Other NASDAQ names in the top 10 include Palantir (185,800) and Adobe (133,650), both reflecting the UK audience’s fascination with US tech companies.

FTSE Vs NASDAQ

The pie chart below shows a decisive tilt towards FTSE stocks:

  • Monthly searches for FTSE 100 stocks account for around 65% of search volume (~5.1m searches).
  • Monthly searches for NASDAQ 100 stocks come in at around 35% (~2.7m searches).

FTSE’s dominance comes from its breadth and its position as the country’s domestic stock market: Lloyds, BT, BP, IAG, and Tesco alone generate around 2.2m searches combined, with many others contributing mid-level volumes.

NASDAQ’s smaller overall share reflects its concentration – nearly half of its total comes from just two names, Tesla and NVIDIA.

Sector-Level Themes

The sector-level breakdown shows two very different stories:

FTSE 100

  • Financials lead with ~1.8m searches (≈35%), mainly thanks to Lloyds (765k), Aviva (218k), HSBC (206k), and Barclays (191k).
  • Energy & Utilities contribute ~820k (≈16%), from BP (402k), Shell (116k), National Grid (109k), and Centrica (102k).
  • Consumer sectors generate ~1.1m (≈22%), with IAG (384k), Tesco (251k), EasyJet (179k), and JD Sports (62k).
  • Healthcare adds ~220k, with GSK (124k) and AstraZeneca (93k).
  • Industrials (~250k) includes BAE Systems (63k) and Rolls-Royce (58k).
  • Materials, Real Estate, and Tech & Communication add smaller but meaningful contributions.

Unlike NASDAQ’s tech-heavy focus, FTSE’s searches are diverse, spanning banking, energy, telecoms, and everyday consumer names.

NASDAQ 100

  • Information Technology dominates with nearly 1.8m searches (≈65% of total), led by NVIDIA (640k), Palantir (186k), AMD (100k), and Apple (96k).
  • Consumer Discretionary (~850k, ≈30%) is almost entirely Tesla (678k) and Amazon (155k).
  • Communication Services (~200k) includes Meta (116k) and Alphabet (47k).
  • All other sectors combined (Financials, Healthcare, Industrials, Energy, Utilities, Real Estate, Consumer Staples, Materials) contribute under 10%.

NASDAQ searches are overwhelmingly tech-driven, with Tesla as the key outlier in Consumer Discretionary.

Methodology

  • Scope: FTSE 100 and NASDAQ 100 constituents.
  • Data source: Ahrefs, looking at average monthly search volumes over the last 12 months.
  • Date data last pulled: 23 September 2025
  • Search terms: For each stock, we tracked three main terms:
    1. “[Stock] share price”
    2. “[Stock] stock”
    3. “[Stock] shares”
  • Total volume per brand: We combined the three terms into one figure per stock. This avoids over-weighting any one query type and gives a better picture of overall search demand.
