The United States Puts Eight UK Universities On Its Financial Watch List

April 30, 2015

education-in-ukAuthorities in the United States are focusing their attention on educational institutions that have issues over their financial transactions and concerns on the issuance of student loans. The US Department of Education has put together a list of 540 such institutions which consist mostly of for profit U.S colleges. These educational institutions will be under a “heightened cash monitoring” alert to ensure that no laws are broken and financial integrity is maintained at all times.

Eight U.K Universities feature in this blacklist of 540 educational institutions. The eight universities to feature on the list are the University of Wales, Lampeter, which is a part of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Birmingham City, Rose Bruford College, Middlesex, Gloucestershire, Westminster and Queen Margaret.

Some of the other international universities to feature on this include Canada’s University of Toronto; the Netherlands’ University of Amsterdam and Australia’s University of Melbourne.

The list has been widely published all over the United States and could hurt the image of these educational establishments. Prospective students will most likely think twice before signing up for a degree due to the blacklisting of these universities.

The US under secretary of education Ted Mitchell wrote a blog post that shed a little more light into the process behind the blacklisting of these education establishments. In his blog post, Mitchell wrote that the process behind the blacklisting a university could be due to “Financial or federal compliance issues. It is “not necessarily a red flag” but means “we are watching these institutions more closely to ensure [they] are using federal student aid in a way that is accountable to both students and taxpayers”.
